Silanes are used in a large variety of high performance coatings, metal treatment and resin systems. Usually known as adhesion promoters they act as a binding agent between organic resins and inorganic substrates. Furthermore, they are used to modify organic resins and even for the synthesis of resins. Recently introduced in the market are water-borne binders on the basis of silanes.
The novel water-borne silane binders Dynasylan® SIVO 140 and Dynasylan® SIVO 160 are used in corrosion protection formulations. Typical application areas of Dynasylan® SIVO 140 are marine and protective coatings.
Coatings against corrosion based on our Dynasylan® SIVO products are not just sustainable but also easy to process. For example, the zinc dust can be directly added to the binder, like in the formulation of traditional solvent-borne zinc silicate paints.
Even though aluminum is less corrosive than other metal substrates, it may be necessary to protect the blank aluminum surface as well as HDG steel against corrosion. Water-borne silane formulations with Dynasylan® SIVO 160 can be applied to such substrates. To protect these substrates against corrosion, even dry film thicknesses as low as 100 to 200 nm are effective.
Dynasylan® SIVO 140 is especially developed for two-pack zinc rich paints. Formulations based on this water-borne binder are almost VOC-free, show a high heat resistance and cure at room temperature.
Water-borne silane systems based on Dynasylan® SIVO 160 can be used for the corrosion protection of aluminum. In contrast to current solutions the binder contains neither heavy metals nor fluorides. A film thickness of just 100 to 200 nm is all that is needed for the corrosion protection of the aluminum surface.
