Dynasylan® in Coatings Applications
In these days coatings must do more than just look good - they have important functions and are tailored to specific applications.
Dynasylan® can help to
- improve adhesion between the coating and substrate
- improve the dispersion of pigments and fillers in the coating
- improve the mar resistance of a coating

Organosilanes, most commonly called silanes can make a huge impact on coatings even in small amounts. They are well established as adhesion promoters and surface modifiers but they are increasingly used in many different ways in coatings. Using the chemistry of silanes in your formulation can help you offer new solutions.

Water-based coating systems |
As the regulations have greatly evolved especially those related to low VOC, the use of water-based coatings has increased enormously. The use of silanes can greatly improve their performance.

Paints and coatings formulators are facing strong environmental pressure and changes in the regulations that encourage them to develop low VOC or high-solid solutions.
In the same manner specific silanes have been designed to be used in such systems. For example, in latex coatings, water-based silanes such as Dynasylan® HYDROSIL 2776 can be added as an additive or used as a primer to improve the adhesion and the moisture resistance.
For special applications, such as ceramics and glass, water-based inorganic binders are desired. In these cases Dynasylan® HYDROSIL 2926 is the cobinder of choice for highly pigmented systems.
The leader in silanes has focused its latest developments on very effective and easy-to-use silanes that respond to the current industry trends such as waterborne and high-solid solutions to formulate coatings emulsions, but also silane solutions fulfilling several functionalities in a single product.

Low VOC |
The coatings industry is taking a number of steps in order to reduce the VOC-content of their coating formulations.
One of the main directions is to formulate UV-cured, water-based, or high solid coatings.
These new coating systems can be reformulated in order to achieve and sometimes surpass the performance of standard coating systems. For instance they reduce the impact of high loading levels on the viscosity in high-solid coatings. It will also improve the film performance in term of:

Silanes can markedly improve water-based coatings especially if they are incorporated into the resin matrix during manufacture of the acrylic resins.
Wood impregnation with silanes improves the useful life of treated wood.
Especially for wood exposed to weathering such as garden furniture. Silane surface modification is extremely resistant against weathering and will actively prevent fouling caused by micro-organisms.
Dynasylan® SIVO 121 is normally applied to uncoated wood surfaces and generates a hydrophobic and easy-to-clean effect on the surface of the wood.
As it is not a coating, it is almost invisible and does not leave a layer on the surface. It penetrates into the material and is breathable (not impermeable to water) and avoid trapped moisture.
Dynasylan® SIVO 121 presents the following features:
- UV stablility
- Oil repellency
- Water repellency
- Significant reduction of mold growth
- Weathering
