Dynasylan® as Curing Agents          Dynasylan® as Curing Agents

Aminofunctional silanes may be used in a similar way as traditional amine curing agents (hardeners) for epoxy and urethane functional resins. They have the additional advantage that the silanol groups of the silane also react with each other to form siloxane (Si-O-Si) bonds, a process known as condensation. The result of this silane crosslinking is an improvement in the strength and the wear resistance of the coating due to the extreme stability of the Si-O-Si network.

Example: Dynasylan® AMEO aminofunctional silane may be used as a curing agent in a 2-component SILIKOFTAL® ED epoxy-silicone corrosion-resistant coating.*

Traditional corrosion resistant coatings often consist of three layers:

  • a zinc primer directly on the steel
  • a corrosion-resistant epoxy undercoating
  • a UV- and weather-resistant polyurethane topcoat

A two-layer system with the same performance may be produced using a SILIKOFTAL® ED silicone - epoxy system hardened with a Dynasylan® aminosilane.

The advantages of a single topcoat silicone-epoxy system on zinc-primed steel over traditional PU-epoxy two topcoat systems on the same substrate are:

  • excellent UV resistance
  • excellent chemical resistance
  • comparable corrosion resistance
  • exceptional resistance to stains and graffiti
  • low volatile organic content (VOC)

Organosilanes, most commonly called silanes can make a huge impact on coatings even in small amounts. They are well established as adhesion promoters and surface modifiers but they are increasingly used in many different ways in coatings. Using the chemistry of silanes in your formulation can help you offer new solutions.

The leader in silanes has focused its latest developments on very effective and easy-to-use silanes that respond to the current industry trends such as waterborne and high-solid solutions to formulate coatings emulsions, but also silane solutions fulfilling several functionalities in a single product.
