Just a Little Goes a Long Way: A New Degussa Brochure Provides Information on Silanes for Adhesives and Sealants

Wednesday, December 14, 2006

Silanes from Degussa are part of everyday life among many other applications, they help protect building facades against graffiti and moisture, integrally fit modern thermopane glass facades in the fronts of buildings, and facilitate high-speed communication around the world. Degussa AG, Düsseldorf, has now come out with a new brochure providing information on the use of its Dynasylan® specialty silanes in adhesives and sealants.

A Dynasylan® product is mixed into a commercially available adhesive, and can therefore be imagined as an adhesive within an adhesive. This significantly improves the adhesion, crosslinking, and drying of adhesives. It is the silanes that make adhesives and sealants as reliable as we have now come to expect. In many cases they have superseded labor-intensive processes like screwing, welding, and riveting. Dynasylan® products can also be used for reinforcement and as endcappers. They can, for example, help convert isocyanate-containing polyurethane adhesives or sealants by means of a complete and rapid reaction into moisture-curing and more environmentally friendly adhesives.

The 24-page Degussa brochure entitled "Silanes for Adhesives and Sealants" is not just restricted to the applications of Dynasylan®, however; it also explains the customer-friendly service concept for Dynasylan® specialty silanes. In addition to promptness and reliability, customers also benefit from the country-specific expertise of the world leader in specialty chemicals. Logistics are continually being brought into line with customers’ supply requirements. As the only major manufacturer of organofunctional silanes, Degussa offers a range of unit sizes ideally suited to customers' requirements, from 25 kg drums to 20-metric-ton bulk containers, and will also provide customized quantities on request.

Degussa silanes are produced in a particularly resource-conserving manner. Closed-loop production processes ensure that the by-products or residues of one process can be used as starting materials for another. And Dynasylan® functions on the principle that a little bit goes a long way: Even very small quantities of the additive bring about decisive improvements in adhesives and sealants. Degussa's Dynasylan® products therefore comply with the regulations of the chemical industry's Responsible Care initiative.

For users, silanes such as Dynasylan® 1146 have an additional advantage. They contain almost no volatile organic constituents, and are therefore considerably safer and more environmentally friendly.
